Beginners

Beginner Swimming Lessons for Children at Dolphin Academy

This is a unique class for those who are new to swimming and require a little bit more support in the water. Beginner classes are taken with an instructor in the water to guide our Dolphins through their skills and aim to make happy and confident swimmers.

Children in this group learn fundamental skills, which are the building blocks for their swimming journey, ready to start their independent classes from Stage 1.

My daughter Evie absolutely loves this class; she smiles as soon as she comes through to the poolside and sees her teacher Becky. To know my daughter is already safe around water and swimming without me is brilliant. I am amazed at her progress at such a young age!

Danny Allen (Evie, aged 3)

Awards Achieved: Dolphin Level 1, 5m Distance Certificate, 10m Certificate and Beginners Certificate

Stage 1

Stage 1 Swimming Lessons for Children at Dolphin Academy

This is our first independent stage for those aged 4+ who are water-confident. At Dolphin Academy, we believe in getting even our youngest swimmers to swim at a faster pace. Therefore, we always maximize their water time. Our unique methods of focusing on body positioning and kicking on top of the water have proven results, not only in getting them to swim unaided but also in learning fundamental skills, which we believe are of paramount importance to their development into strong swimmers.

This class also teaches paddling, floating, and diving, and aims to equip your child with water confidence and the ability to swim 25 meters unaided on both their front and back.

Eli has been coming to swimming with Becky since he was a baby, and he is now a water-confident 4-year-old! The best teacher ever and always goes the extra mile for the kids. Would recommend Dolphin Academy to anyone wanting to take their children swimming!

Rachel Smith (Eli, aged 4)

Awards Achieved: Dolphin Level 2, 25m Distance Certificate and Stage 1 Certificate

Stage 2

Stage 2 Swimming Lessons for Children at Dolphin Academy

Once your child has the confidence and ability to swim 25 meters without support, it is time to start perfecting their strokes. You can guarantee your child is in more than capable hands when it comes to teaching technique.

Our Stage 2 classes focus on learning arm movements for front crawl and backstroke. This is the class where you really see your child develop into a competent swimmer! This stage also introduces breaststroke and butterfly. Children in this class will gain their 50m distance award, swimming perfect front crawl and backstroke.

My daughter has been going for about a year now, and I can see a massive difference. When she joined, she couldn’t swim and didn’t like putting her head in the water; she wouldn’t even jump in without crying. Now, one year later and having only just turned 4 years old, she can swim independently (up to 50m) and can do a full length of backstroke with arms. She is now learning front crawl! She does sitting dives and has even asked to jump in... no more tears!

Kim Barton (Ava, aged 4)

Awards Achieved: Dolphin Level 3, Dolphin Level 4, 50m Distance Certificate and Stage 2 Certificate

Stage 3

Stage 3 Swimming Lessons for Children at Dolphin Academy

This class is for those who can swim 50-100 meters using recognizable front crawl and backstroke. The main aim of this class is stamina, and so there is a large focus on kicking. From our competitive swimming experience, we understand the importance of a good, strong kick to aid all parts of swimming.

Alongside perfecting breathing on front crawl, this class teaches breaststroke and butterfly. Competitive skills are introduced early to our Stage 3 swimmers, such as tumble turns and diving. We believe that by teaching these skills as early as possible, they will become natural and will ensure our swimmers are equipped with the essentials of becoming a top-quality swimmer! It is also during this stage that we introduce personal survival awards, skills, and drills.

Absolutely fantastic teaching! My little girl has come on loads in such a short space of time and thoroughly enjoys it!

Lynne Charlton (Emma, aged 6)

Awards Achieved: Dolphin Level 5, 100m Distance Certificate and Stage 3 Certificate

Stage 4

Stage 4 Swimming Lessons for Children at Dolphin Academy

These classes are for those who can swim all four strokes and can comfortably swim between 100-200 meters. In this stage, the emphasis is on fitness, and swimmers will be asked to complete each skill/drill for 50 meters so they can hold their stroke technique for longer distances.

There is also a lot of emphasis on streamline positioning, with plenty of explanation on the importance of it and on how to become a more efficient swimmer. Butterfly and breaststroke are really broken down and perfected in this stage, and we aim to put together all the competitive skills taught in the previous stages to make our learners complete swimmers.

My daughter has recently started swimming lessons and loves it. All the staff are lovely the class sizes are perfect.

Suzanne Goodier (Phoebe, aged 8)

Awards Achieved: Dolphin Level 6, 200m Distance Certificate and Stage 4 Certificate

Stage 5

Stage 5 Swimming Lessons for Children at Dolphin Academy

This is our final stage. The learners in this class are strong and confident swimmers and can swim with good technique in all four strokes. The swimming lessons in Stage Five focus on perfecting all aspects of their strokes, including correct starts and turns, as well as the introduction of lane discipline.

This stage acts as a pre-club stage before learners progress into our Top Squad, which provides the opportunity for competitive swimming.

Max has become such a strong and confident swimmer during his time with Becky, Brian, and other fabulous teachers at Dolphin Academy. Max previously had lessons at a local authority pool and made little progress there, mainly due to large class sizes and a one-size-fits-all approach. Max has autism, and it’s thanks to the patience of everyone at Dolphin Academy that Max now looks forward to his swimming lessons!

Debbie Tomlinson (Max, aged 8)

Awards Achieved: Dolphin Level 7, ASA Bronze Award, 400m Distance Certificate and Stage 5 Certificate

Top Squad

Swim Club for Children at Dolphin Academy

This is the final stage in your swimmer’s journey and is designed for those who have finished our learn-to-swim program. Top Squad was created with the vision of providing a pathway into competitive swimming while fostering fitness, teamwork, and sports discipline.

In this stage, we work on stroke technique and race practice. We believe it is the perfect stepping stone between swimming lessons and joining their local swimming club!

Our Riley came as a fairly older new starter, but Becky, Brian, and the rest of the team are fabulous. He’s gone from a standing start to being in the Top Squad in no time at all. Crucially though, it’s not just about pushing — he really enjoys the swimming, his friends, and the Dolphin approach. Thank you!

Steven Croft (Riley, aged 8)

Awards Achieved: ASA Silver Award, ASA Gold Award, 800m Distance Certificate and 1 Mile Distance Certificate
